SEI’s Climate Corps Fellowship Program Awarded Two Major DOE Grants to Transform the Built Environment in Washington State and City of Seattle
SEPTEMBER 24, 2024
(SAN RAFAEL, CA) - As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s $240 million investment in adopting and implementing energy-efficient and innovative building codes, SEI’s Climate Corps program has been awarded two major grants with the state of Washington and the City of Seattle. These grants will provide funding for nearly 100 Climate Corps Fellows over 9 years to support the implementation of Washington’s first-in-nation Clean Buildings Performance Standard.
“SEI is proud to support the City of Seattle and the state of Washington in their efforts to reduce climate pollution,” said SEI Founder and Executive Director Cyane Dandridge. “The buildings sector is the single greatest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. This grant offers a roadmap for other cities and states across this nation to meet ambitious and urgent climate goals while improving the financial well-being of individuals, businesses, and entire communities.”
SEI’s Climate Corps Fellows will help match building owners, particularly in low-income and underserved areas, with clean energy expertise to meet the Clean Building Performance Standards, as part of the $7.7 million grant to Washington State.
Fellows will work in partnership with Washington’s Department of Commerce, the Smart Buildings Center Education Program, and San Timoteo Associates on the launch of the innovative Building Efficiency and Clean Operations Network (BEACON) to provide technical assistance for a successful implementation of building performance standards across the state.
Under a $17.2 million grant, the work of SEI’s Climate Corps program in the City of Seattle will focus on accelerating equitable outcomes and high compliance rates for Seattle’s buildings performance standard.
“This isn’t just an investment in infrastructure; this is an investment in people,” said SEI’s Climate Corps Program Director Steve King. “Passionate, diverse, and highly trained Fellows from SEI’s Climate Corps program will be at the forefront of transforming the built environment and working within communities impacted first and worst by climate change. We’re excited and grateful to be supporting these climate resiliency efforts that wouldn’t be possible without the funding from the U.S. DOE.”
SEI’s Climate Corps fellowship program has been a valuable resource for organizations and emerging climate leaders alike. Since 2010, the program has placed more than 800 Fellows within 600 partner organizations, leading to almost one million hours of service, collectively. The support Fellows provide directly impacts communities that are most affected by climate change through their work mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, saving water, and diverting waste. More than 98% of Fellows continue in the sustainability field after completing their fellowships, building our next generation of climate professionals.
Over the past decade we have created specialized training and resources through our Strategic Energy Management track which is perfectly suited for supporting additional states and regions with a wide range of energy and utility programs. As more cities and states have or are in the process of developing building performance standards, we’d welcome the opportunity to explore how we could work with you in the near term. SEI’s Climate Corps Program Welcomes the Launch of the American Climate Corps
OCTOBER 13, 2023
(SAN RAFAEL, CA): Every year our planet experiences increasingly catastrophic events, where people least responsible for climate pollution experience the biggest impacts. Yet, we have the solutions to create a world where all people thrive — innovation, education, workforce development, and building resilience. The climate crisis is an all-hands-on-deck situation, and we are greatly encouraged to see the launch of the American Climate Corps, which promises to amplify the call for emerging professionals to help address our collective climate crisis.
The name of this program has caused some confusion with SEI’s bridge-to-career fellowship program, Climate Corps ©. SEI’s Climate Corps was founded in 2010 in California during the height of the Great Recession and has since expanded across the nation. For the last 13 years, the 800 highly trained Fellows of SEI’s Climate Corps have helped accelerate urgent climate initiatives for more than 600 partner organizations to address specialized scopes of work ranging from environmental justice advocacy to corporate sustainability reporting. Policy, project management, corporate governance work, different from resource More than 98% of SEI’s Climate Corps Fellows move into the sustainability field after completing their fellowships.
SEI's Climate Corps has been recognized by organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC), and the 2022 U.S. Climate Ambition report, which showcased SEI’s Climate Corps as a refined program model for other organizations to replicate across the country. SEI's Climate Corps Fellows receive a University of California Climate Stewards certificate during their 10-month fellowship, which recognizes the training Fellows receive in technical and soft skills.
SEI's Climate Corps fellowship program draws distinction by giving partners flexibility in scope, timing, staffing, and hiring of Fellows. SEI’s specialized recruiting team works closely with our nonprofit and for-profit partners to lead the recruitment and hiring of qualified, mission-driven emerging and transitioning professionals year-round.
SEI’s Climate Corps commitment to Fellow support includes higher stipends, allowing for a more equitable program, an SEI supervisor for career development support, and a strong alumni network. Fellows get peer-to-peer support in specialized industries such as strategic energy management, tribal resilience, and education.
At SEI, we know that every job can be a climate job, and the green transition requires a highly trained, passionate, and creative workforce. The SEI Climate Corps Team is proud to work alongside other programs on this journey to build the next generation of climate leaders.
