SEI’s Climate Corps Program Welcomes the Launch of the American Climate Corps
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(SAN RAFAEL, CA): Every year our planet experiences increasingly catastrophic events, where people least responsible for climate pollution experience the biggest impacts. Yet, we have the solutions to create a world where all people thrive — innovation, education, workforce development, and building resilience. The climate crisis is an all-hands-on-deck situation, and we are greatly encouraged to see the launch of the American Climate Corps, which promises to amplify the call for emerging professionals to help address our collective climate crisis.
The name of this program has caused some confusion with SEI’s bridge-to-career fellowship program, Climate Corps ©. SEI’s Climate Corps was founded in 2010 in California during the height of the Great Recession and has since expanded across the nation. For the last 13 years, the 800 highly trained Fellows of SEI’s Climate Corps have helped accelerate urgent climate initiatives for more than 600 partner organizations to address specialized scopes of work ranging from environmental justice advocacy to corporate sustainability reporting. Policy, project management, corporate governance work, different from resource More than 98% of SEI’s Climate Corps Fellows move into the sustainability field after completing their fellowships.
SEI's Climate Corps has been recognized by organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC), and the 2022 U.S. Climate Ambition report, which showcased SEI’s Climate Corps as a refined program model for other organizations to replicate across the country. SEI's Climate Corps Fellows receive a University of California Climate Stewards certificate during their 10-month fellowship, which recognizes the training Fellows receive in technical and soft skills.
SEI's Climate Corps fellowship program draws distinction by giving partners flexibility in scope, timing, staffing, and hiring of Fellows. SEI’s specialized recruiting team works closely with our nonprofit and for-profit partners to lead the recruitment and hiring of qualified, mission-driven emerging and transitioning professionals year-round.
SEI’s Climate Corps commitment to Fellow support includes higher stipends, allowing for a more equitable program, an SEI supervisor for career development support, and a strong alumni network. Fellows get peer-to-peer support in specialized industries such as strategic energy management, tribal resilience, and education.
At SEI, we know that every job can be a climate job, and the green transition requires a highly trained, passionate, and creative workforce. The SEI Climate Corps Team is proud to work alongside other programs on this journey to build the next generation of climate leaders.
