Walk to Go
- Make a plan to walk not ride to locations within, say, 6 blocks at first. Gradually increase that number until you prefer to walk to near locations.
- Make your walking more enjoyable so that you will do it more. Smile to strangers along the way. Stop to admire and smell the flowers. Listen to music perhaps.
- This next idea is radical. When presented with an elevator, choose to walk up 1 flight or walk down 2 at first. As you build stamina, increase the down threshhold, and maybe the up number. Great exercise. Do you really need 2 tons of metal to transport you down a few flights of stairs? If we all walked down instead of riding it would be a massive savings of electricity and thus CO2. As ironic as it is, people will pay lots of money for aerobics classes at which they will go up and down on stair stepping platforms, but will never even think to use the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Walking also has collateral benefits of clearing the mind, reducing stress, and realigning your priorities.
