Half

Half of what?  Half of anything.  Here is a BIG paradigm shift for us all to make.

As a friend of mine likes to say, anything worth doing is worth half doing. For instance, it is well-recognized by now that eating less meat will reduce your carbon footprint.  But while becoming vegetarian would be great, realistically, vegetarianism is not for everyone.  See if you can reduce your meat consumption by half.

The methane emissions of livestock (cattle, sheep, and other ‘ruminants’) that is a principal cause.  But it is also the amount of energy and resources, fossil-fuel, water, and other, that are concentrated in the production of meats that are at issue.

Another good ‘half’ to apply, is reducing the amount of water used in boiling foods by half (see Pasta).  Or instead of commuting by car all the way to work, drive to some ‘half-way point’ and take the public transportation from there.  The worst part of the drive is usually the last few miles.

As in so many other places in our ClimateCorps website, the main issue is more than the specific suggestions we make.  It is your ability to exercise those parts of your brain, thought, behavior, discussion, and interaction which will produce just those particular changes of habits in your life, and the lives of those around you, which will count the most in our common goal to preserve life on earth.

P.S. I am not a vegetarian.  Nor am I a hypocrite.  I now consume far less meat than just a few short years ago.  And over time, I expect that to decrease even more to where meat is more of a condiment than a mainstay.
