As much as our message is about consuming less stuff, there is certain stuff that is critical to solving the climate crisis. Case in point is the compact flourescent light bulbs (CFLs) that are so much in the media today. But as anyone who has shopped for CFLs knows, they can be pricey little buggers. Of course, when you factor the energy savings the represent over their lifetime, and the much longer lifetime than the old-style incandescent bulbs, they are a true bargain.

But we are a society of smart shoppers, aren't we? While some may consider that to be a contradiction in terms, you get the point. We have been trained to look for bargains and make decisions based upon 'up front' costs alone. That has been our undoing!
